A selection of buttonhooks which have been sold from 2007.

an usual item, firstly fish figurals are rare and secondly it is by a Sheffield maker who registered the design Rd 590912.  This confirms the design to between Nov -Feb 1911/12  The makers mark is a distinctive script RB, assayed in Sheffield 1913 but I have not been able to identify the makers name. Suffice to say it is a rather handsome trophy and superb quality

One of the larger & heavier silver handled BOOT HOOKS  used by ladies to close buttons on Victoria/Edwardian stiff leather boots, also longer to cope with bending in tight corsets which were the fashion of the day!  This design, sometimes known as the “Green Man” is by  the renowned silversmith William Comyns, established in 1859 at Beak Street, London & is hallmarked for London 1898

The green man bearded face on the terminal is found in many cultures is primarily a symbol representing the cycle of re-birth in the Spring. It is hallmarked London 1889 and displays Victoria’s head on the hallmark.

The heavy handle is cast in solid silver, not stamped in two halves as is more usual, and has the equally heavy stylized “London” steel shank which is typical of William Comyns production
