a figural buttonhook in the form of a parrot with glass eyes. These charming & rather naive heads are hand carved from a Corozo nut, a form of vegetable ivory. The husk of the nut can be carved to reveal the pale inner and leaving the dark brown husk as a contrast. Corozo is derived from the nut of the Tagua Palm which grows in the equatorial rainforests of central America. Reputedly, the best comes from Ecuador carved by natives

It is not known the military significance of the character but it appears on a number of buttonhooks in the late 1880’s, There is no assay mark but the maker William Acraman 11 Upper Marylebone Street London NE made a series of these horse & rider designs
