a Sterling silver handled button hook with Greco Roman figures of American origin. It has the appearance of hand wrought silver smithing with three embossed heads and an open terminal. The date of manufacture can be confirmed as 1884 from the inscription “Pauline from Charlie Nov 1884″  which is particularly early for a button hook. It is likely the design was influenced by George W Shiebler who was making similar Homeric style items from 1880 to 1890.
