an all-silver buttonhook from the famous American ‘SHIEBLER’ – a factory for sheer range and beauty of design it excelled in everything it produced .George W Shiebler was acknowledged for his skill and cleverness of the designs and became noted for their medallion work, inspired by the excavations at Pompeii & Herculaneum.

This buttonhook features the Greco/Roman head which typify many of George W Shiebler’s designs. The marks are:STERLING winged “S” 1285 (pattern number)

this example is in a very typical Arts & Crafts design and in addition to the winged “S”  is marked for the retailer TIFFANY with pattern number 2135 STERLING

There is also the name of a previous owner of the buttonhook “Cornelia Marsh Babcock”

This buttonhook feature the Greco/Roman heads which typify many of George W Shiebler’s designs. It is one of the largest and weighs in at an impressive all-silver 96 grams. The marks are 400 THEODORE B STARR winged “S” STERLING.

Unlike the Greco/Roman inspired Shiebler buttonhooks this is a more formal traditional style but it’s origins are unknown. It is marked with the Winged “S” STERLING and pattern number 1797 The date of manufacture is between 1880-1900
