A selection of buttonhooks which have been sold from 2007.

a Victorian silver handled BOOT buttonhook by Levi & Salaman, established in 1873 at 143 Newhall Street, Birmingham. It is hallmarked for Birmingham 1889. These long handled boot hooks were sometimes described as “stout ladies hooks” because they helped to reduce bending down to fasten the buttons!

The design of the handle is reminiscent of a sea horse.

an Arts & Craft silver & shagreen  (sharkskin) handled buttonhook by unknown London maker. It is likely to have formed part of a sophisticated dressing set and shows traces of original gilding. The marks are difficult to read but the Lion Passant and Leopards head confirms a London assay for 1910.
