Item description I have to admit this is something of a mystery item. The handle has all the appearance of silver (but am not sure that it is) and is beautifully chased in a very distinctive design. So what is the unique quality that requires a patent? It is marked PATENTED MARCH 26 1899. I can only think that it has something to do with the construction because there is a yellow metal collar between the handle and the steel shank. The jury is out!

Item description there has been much debate over the years in the Buttonhook Society about these glass buttonhooks! The question as to whether they would have been used as buttonhooks has never been satisfactorily answered. There are many other novelty hooks made from other materials which also were too impractical to use functionally. Item description  faux onyx design handle with hot forged steel shank. This is one of a number of celluloid handled button hooks which have unusually ornate steel shafts, a style which would have been more usual on expensive silver handled buttonhooks from the 1880's when  buttons on clothing and shoes came into fashion. The Hyatt Co of New York (subsequently re-named The Albany Co) developed celluloid in the 1860-70's as an alternative to ivory for billiard balls and initially it would have been considered a desirable novelty material & not the cheaper substitute it became in the 1920's.
It is probable that these celluloid/forged steel buttonhooks are from the early period of plastic production.

Item description this little vintage loop buttoner is a real puzzle! I can only describe it as yellow metal because although it looks like gold, I am 90% sure it is not! So if not gold what is it? Metal worker and jewellers from this period would almost never make such a small item in base metal, usually it would be silver or gold or silver-gilt but this seems to be in brass. Whatever the material, it is a lovely little example of twisted wire work.

Item description this design of traditional Chinese dragon is usually associated with Chinese Export Silver buttonhooks but I have to admit never having seen this style of construction with steel shank. It could be a marriage of Chinese silver handle and English steel shank but close inspection shows it to have been in the current form for many, many years if not an original from the late 19th century. There are no marks on the silver but the chasing of the dragon is impressive

Item description one of two John Nowill hooks, an impressive ivory & silver collar boot buttonhook by John Nowill of Sheffield, established in 1700 & whose son was Master Cutler in 1788. In addition to making buttonhooks on his own account, John Nowill made ornamental forged steel shanks for a number of prestigious makers, the multiple knops of the bolster being a feature of his style. Note also the "crossed keys" mark on the steel shank, one of the earliest marks granted by the Cutlers Company in 1842. The ivory handle is hand carved and the silver collar hallmarked for Sheffield 1889. If you wish to know more about this maker, see the article in the Buttonhook Society newsletter (The Boutonneur Nr 123 July 2000)

Item reference 2265
Item description a novelty version of the ubiquitous advertising hook which is a "puzzle" i.e. how do the two items come apart? It looks quite simple but I can assure you it is not! Something of a rarity in that one half is stamped TIDY BETTY STOVE & GRATE POLISH, and the other READ PEARSON'S WEEKLY. Give it to the grandchildren to solve and it will give them hours of pleasure!!
Dimensions each hook is just over 3 inches
Condition
each part when separated is identical with exception the advertising slogan. I do not think Pearson's Weekly would have been happy promoting Tidy Betty polish and vice versa so the complete article would not have originated as such.
However, the two parts do fit together to complete the puzzle, originate from the same date (circa) so it is a bit of an enigma

Item description this most unusual extra long boot buttonhook is of unknown origin. The handle is made from an early form of plastic simulated to look like ivory and is very realistic. Inset into the handle is a silver coloured  metal filigree design incorporating flowers, leaves and a stylistic bird. The manufacturing characteristics of the steel shank are distinctly Sheffield so maybe it is from an English maker.
Dimensions 16 inches overall
Condition not in the best condition with a couple of small losses of the filigree metal and a crack at the end of the handle. It is, never-the-less, a handsome piece

Item description A rare silver handled Kate Harris designed  buttonhook by William Hutton & Sons established in 1894 at Hanley Street, Birmingham & later of Oxford Street, London. It has a Registered Design Nr, is hallmarked London 1903 and displays the classic art nouveau design of a lady's face in profile with flowing hair. Distinctive shape of steel shaft consistent with all Hutton/Kate Harris buttonhooks.

The following is an extract from Eric Knowles book on Art Nouveau metalwork. Kate Harris began designing for William Hutton in 1901 and fast became their foremost designer. She made useful & decorative wares in a distinctive style that displayed her individual interpretation of Art Nouveau. Her metalwork designs incorporate flowing lines and organic motifs of the Art Nouveau style and her best work strikes a balance between decoration and form, achieved by combining inventive shapes with stylised figurative work. Harris provided a number of designs to William Hutton and Sons, who supplied silver to the progressive London department store Liberty and Co. The work of Kate Harris commands a premium.
